Syria: Children sold for less than 1,000 NIS for parents can't finance themThe situation in Syria has deteriorated to the point that the parents have lost all hope and they sell their children for money. “Papa wanted to sell me for money,” 4-year-old Mahmoud stated. Fortunately, he was adopted by a woman but others are less fortunate.

In refugee camps adjacent to the Syrian-Turkish border, poverty and despair prevail. Numerous Syrians are sitting in tents and shacks without any income or future. Large families are forced to huddle together and parents often sell their children to the highest bidder. One of them is 4-year-old Mahmoud.
“Papa wanted to sell me for money,” the young boy stated in a TV broadcast by the Aleppo Rebel Channel. Mahmoud was not the only child that one could buy. It is apparently a widespread and growing phenomenon. “The situation of his father got worse,” an activist in the refugee camp stated. When they told me that he wanted to sell him, I could not believe it. It was unbelievable. A father selling his son.”

The activist continued, “If you want to buy a couple of birds, this will cost over 50,000 Syrian liras. He then came to someone and suggested to him that he buys him in exchange for 50,000 Syrian liras. ‘I don’t have a way to finance him,’ the father stated.”
50,000 Syrian liras is like 880 NIS, which is less than the price of a caged canary bird that sings. Mahmoud was adopted by a woman who had mercy on him. She helps other children like him. “Yesterday, I heard that he is selling the boy and I decided to adopt him,” she stated. “I told him that I have other orphans at my place. The situation here is very difficult. 20 people live in this tent.”
