LONDON, June 22 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Soaring global demand for natural beauty products could be fuelling modern-day slavery as ingredients such as cocoa, vanilla and the mineral mica are linked to child labour while cosmetic supply chains lack oversight, analysts said on Friday.

Every day, 41,000 girls marry before they are 18 years old. That’s 15 million girls every year. While child marriage can happen to both boys and girls, in most places around the world, the practice mostly affects girls.

Girls like Nafissa* (not her real name), from Niger.

"I stopped (going to) school in order to marry," says the young teen, "It was because of people’s mentality and their prejudices. I was married during a school break and, before I could return, I became pregnant. After that, I never returned."

Προστατεύοντας τα παιδιά από την παιδική εργασία σε καταστάσεις έκτακτης ανάγκης




Πάνω από 1,5 δισεκατομμύρια άνθρωποι ζουν σε χώρες που πλήττονται από συγκρούσεις, βία και ευαλωτότητα. Την ίδια στιγμή, περίπου 200 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι πλήττονται από καταστροφές κάθε χρόνο. Το ένα τρίτο εξ’ αυτών είναι παιδιά. Ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό των 168 εκατομμυρίων παιδιών που εμπλέκονται σε παιδική εργασία ζουν σε περιοχές που πλήττονται από συγκρούσεις και καταστροφές. Η Παγκόσμια Ημέρα κατά της Παιδικής Εργασίας επικεντρώνεται φέτος στον αντίκτυπο των συγκρούσεων και των καταστροφών στην παιδική εργασία.

Η ΑΡΣΙΣ-Κοινωνική Οργάνωση Υποστήριξης Νέων λειτουργεί από το 1992 στην Ελλάδα στοχεύοντας στην υποστήριξη των κοινωνικά ευάλωτων και αποκλεισμένων ομάδων. Η δραστηριοποίηση της οργάνωσης στο προσφυγικό επικεντρώνεται από το 2006 στην υποστήριξη των ασυνόδευτων παιδιών προσφύγων και αιτούντων άσυλο, με πληθώρα υπηρεσιών και δομών φιλοξενίας σε Θεσσαλονίκη, Αθήνα, Βόλο, Αλεξανδρούπολη και Κοζάνη. Τον τελευταίο χρόνο οι προσπάθειες υποστήριξης των ασυνόδευτων ανηλίκων αλλά και των ευάλωτων οικογενειών αιτούντων άσυλο εντείνονται καθώς ο αριθμός τους αυξάνεται σημαντικά.

The Afghan government took a concrete step towards addressing child marriage this week by launching a “National Action Plan to Eliminate Early and Child Marriage”. This is an encouraging development in a country where 33% of girls are married before the age of 18.

 Free part-time childcare places for all 3- and 4-year-olds in England were introduced in the early 2000s. The government is now planning to extend this offer from 15 to 30 hours per week (still for 38 weeks of the year) for children in working families from September 2017. One of the aims of the policy is to enable parents to work more – but is it likely to achieve this aim? Στη Δυτική Αφρική, το κακάο είναι μια από τις βασικές καλλιέργειες για εξαγωγή. Το 60% των εσόδων της Ακτής Ελεφαντοστού από εξαγωγές προέρχεται από κακάο. Καθώς η βιομηχανία σοκολάτας έχει αναπτυχθεί αρκετά τα τελευταία χρόνια υπάρχει ζήτηση για φθηνό κακάο. Κατά μέσο όρο, οι αγρότες που εργάζονται στις φυτείες κακάο κερδίζουν λιγότερα από $ 2 την
ημέρα, ένα εισόδημα κάτω από το όριο της φτώχειας.

 Και συχνά καταφεύγουν στη χρήση της παιδικής εργασίας για να διατηρήσουν τις τιμές τους ανταγωνιστικές. Τα παιδιά είναι τα κύρια θύματα της ακραίας φτώχειας και αρχίζουν να εργάζονται
