Every day, millions of people drink chlorinated tap water.

Chlorine is used to keep our water clean by disinfecting it and killing germs. And it does a marvelous job at eliminating most pathogens from the water we drink.

But the use of this powerful chemical has a downside. According to a report from the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk for people who drink chlorinated water is up to 93% higher than for those whose water does not contain chlorine.

When chlorine was first introduced to the water supply, it brought a rapid reduction in the spread of disease and other water-borne ailments. It made it easier for cities and towns to purify drinking water and to keep their residents safe.

Μια ομάδα ενδιαφερόμενων πολιτών κατέθεσε μια συλλογική αγωγή 325 σελίδων κατά της Nestlé Waters North America, την εταιρεία που κατέχει την Poland Spring, υποστηρίζοντας ότι η επιχείρηση από καιρό εξαπατά τους πελάτες της με εσφαλμένη επισήμανση κοινών υπόγειων υδάτων ως «νερό πηγής», ανέφερε το Courthouse News...

Η αγωγή κατατέθηκε σε ομοσπονδιακό δικαστήριο του Κοννέκτικατ την Τρίτη, κατηγορώντας τη Nestlé Waters North America Inc. για μια “κολοσσιαία απάτη που διαπράττεται εναντίον Αμερικανών καταναλωτών”.

Η Ξηρασία Πυροδότησε Τον Εμφύλιο Της Συρίας



Η ξηρασία που ξεκίνησε στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο το 1998 και δημιούργησε τις συνθήκες για την έναρξη του καταστροφικού εμφύλιου πολέμου της Συρίας, ήταν η χειρότερη περίπτωση κλιματικής αλλαγής τα τελευταία 900 χρόνια, σύμφωνα με μελέτη της NASA.

Οι επιστήμονες ανέλυσαν την ιστορία της ξηρασίας, εξετάζοντας αρχεία από δαχτυλίδια κορμών δέντρων που υποδεικνύουν την ετήσια βροχόπτωση από το 1100 μέχρι σήμερα.

Η περιοχή που επηρεάστηκε περιλαμβάνει χώρες στη Νότια Ευρώπη και τη Βόρεια Αφρική, και κυρίως στη Μέση Ανατολή.

«Το μέγεθος και η σημασία της ανθρωπογενούς κλιματικής αλλαγής απαιτεί από εμάς να κατανοήσουμε πραγματικά το πλήρες φάσμα της φυσικής μεταβλητότητας του κλίματος», δήλωσε ο Μπεν Κουκ της NASA.

NEW YORK – Fluence Corporation has officially launched following the merger between US firm RWL Water and Israeli firm Emefcy Group.

Announced earlier in May (read article), the merge was subject to shareholders’ approval, which has been passed with the resulting company now trading on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) as Fluence (FLC).

PITTSBURGH, PA, JULY 18, 2017 -- The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has selected Emerson (NYSE: EMR) as the design-build contractor for a comprehensive automation project to modernize its Southeast Treatment Plant. Built in 1952, the Southeast Treatment Plant is the city's largest wastewaterfacility, responsible for treating 57 million gallons of wastewater per day. During heavy rains, it has the capacity to treat up to 250 million gallons per day.

Plymouth U start-up develops rapid test to detect fecal contamination in water

A Plymouth University (UK) start-up is commercializing a technology that can screen water for fecal contamination in less than 15 minutes.

MolEndoTech improves on current tests, which generally take between hours and days to detect fecal contamination. The start-up’s innovation, initially developed by Plymouth professor Simon Jackson, would significantly improve the ability to identify and track the source of pollution.

The technology comes at an appropriate time, as it was recently discovered that ice from coffee chains including Starbucks and Caffe Nero was found to contain an alarming level of fecal bacteria.

DESALINATION PLANT PROVIDES RELIABLE PROCESS WATER FOR SAUDI ARABIA REFINERY

One of the key challenges in desalination and other types of water treatment is in investing in new technologies and using new techniques to offer low-cost, reliable, desalinated water to industrial clients and communities. Providing low-cost desalinated water for processes and drinking water was one of the major goals of the Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) Thermal Vapor Compression Seawater Desalination project at the Aramco Refinery in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia.

The project entailed installing a facility for a 10,000 m³/day seawater desalination plant at the Rabigh refinery (currently PetroRabigh Refinery and Petrochemicals Complex) capable of meeting its process and potable water demands. The facility is located on the Red Sea, about 150 km north of Jeddah. The 10,000 m³/day capacity MED plant produces process water and potable water for the Saudi Aramco refinery and the community. The plant has been in operation since mid-2005, and has been consistently producing distillated water at or above the design output and product quality.

America is in the midst of an "invisible water crisis" as the post-war water infrastructure reaches the end of its duty-cycle and cash-strapped public utilities struggle to find the money to rebuild it. In cities like Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle, and Detroit, families increasingly find themselves in water debt, and in Detroit, 50,000 households have had their running water cut off because of delinquency.

The estimated bill for upgrading the end-of-lifed American urban water infrastructure is $1 trillion.
