In old bhopal, not far from the small Indian city’s glitzy new shops and gorgeous lakes, is the abandoned Union Carbide factory. Here, in one ramshackle building, are hundreds of broken brown bottles crusted with the white residue of unknown chemicals. Below the corroding skeleton of another, drops of mercury glitter in the sun. In the far corner of the site is the company’s toxic-waste dump, shrouded in a sickly green moss. Not 15 feet away, a scrawny boy of about 6 tries to join a game of cricket. A few skinny cows graze next to a large, murky puddle. Strewn on the ground are torn plastic bags, yellowed newspapers, stained paper cups. And in the air, the pungent fumes of chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Chinese media has revealed the vessel operators behind the collision that caused a palm oil spill in the country’s mainland waters as Singapore-based Pacific International Lines (PIL) and Global Marine Service (GMS).

According to South China Morning Post, an incident between PIL’s Kota Ganteng containership and the Global Apollon, a Japanese-owned chemical tanker registered in Panama and belonging to GMS, was to blame for globs of stearin washing up on Hong Kong’s beaches.

“This provides the most complete account yet of what was happening in the hydrocarbon plumes in the deep ocean during the event,” observed Gary Anderson, a microbial ecologist at the National Laboratory of the Department of Energy, located in Berkeley. The “event” was the largest oil spill in history — the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. It is estimated that the total discharge of oil into the Gulf was 4.9 million barrels.

Ήταν μεσημέρι της 28ης Ιουνίου 2007, στο τέλος ενός ιδιαίτερα έντονου και πολυήμερου καύσωνα στην Αθήνα, όταν ξεκίνησε η μεγαλύτερη και δριμύτερη ιστορικά πυρκαγιά στον Εθνικό Δρυμό Πάρνηθας. Σαν σήμερα που γράφεται το κείμενο, η φωτιά πέρασε στον Δρυμό της Πάρνηθας, ενώ ξεκίνησε στα Δερβενοχώρια Αττικής κι εξαπλώθηκε πολύ γρήγορα στα δυτικά του βουνού.

Αφού διένυσε περίπου 15 χιλιόμετρα και κατέκαψε δεκάδες χιλιάδες στρέμματα, έσβησε αρκετές μέρες μετά, αφήνοντας πίσω της μια ανείπωτη καταστροφή που συγκλόνισε ολόκληρη την ελληνική κοινωνία και επηρέασε σημαντικά το οικοσύστημα της περιοχής.

The amplification of flood frequencies by sea level rise is expected to become one of the most economically damaging impacts of climate change for many coastal locations, scientists warned. In a recent study, undertaken by researchers from Princeton and Rutgers universities, it was found that along the US coastline, the average risk of a 100-year flood will increase 40-fold by 2050. Places such as New York City, Seattle, and San Diego are set to be deluged by far more frequent and severe flooding events if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t slashed. Some of the worst affected areas would be in Hawaii, with Mokuoloe island, situated off Oahu, forecast to be deluged by 130 floods a year that is currently considered to be 100-year events.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently took to social media to demand action to protect the endangered vaquita porpoise, a species native to the Gulf of California in Mexico that is on the verge of extinction. A week later, the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) joined the fray by releasing a document with ten policy suggestions that the Mexican government should implement to protect the mammal.
