SRINAGAR: A day after massive violence in Srinagar by-polls in which 8 people were killed and around 100 securitymen injured, the ruling People's Democratic Party demanded that the by-election to the Anantnag parliamentary seat -- where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's brother Tasaduq Mufti is contesting -- be postponed. The turnout in yesterday's polls was 7%, the lowest in 30 years. Security was strengthened across Kashmir as a two-day strike, called by separatists, started. Internet service on cellphones was stopped till April 12 and the train services from Baramulla to Banihal were also suspended as part of precautionary measures.
Here's your 10-point cheatsheet to the story:
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's brother Tasaduq Mufti, who is making his political debut from Anantnag, a family stronghold, said he was willing to withdraw if it helps defer the polls."I am here for a cause. The cause is to assess situations and make things better. There was written communication (from the government) that this is not a right time for polls," he said.
In a series of tweets, National Conference chief Omar Abdullah hit out at the state's PDP-BJP government. Alleging that Ms Mufti is "in denial", he tweeted, "Tassaduq's statement is an indictment of his sister @MehboobaMufti's government & its abject failure. How can the BJP not see this?"
The targeting of polling booths continued this morning, with government schools designated as election centres for the Anantnag being set on fire. Yesterday, a government high school in Pulwama, which was being used as a voting centre, was set on fire.
Following a two-day shutdown and protest call by separatists against Sunday's civilian killings, markets, public transports, education institutions and other businesses remained closed across Kashmir Valley.
The Kashmir University has postponed all examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
Chief Electoral Officer Shant Manu has said re-polling will be held at nearly 100 polling stations where violence had disrupted voting.
More than 200 incidences of violence took place yesterday at Budgam and Beerwah amid the poll boycott call by separatists. The people threw stones at security forces and used petrol bombs to target polling booths. Of the eight people who died, seven belonged to Budgam and one to Ganderbal district.
The Anantnag seat fell vacant last year after Ms Mufti resigned from the Lok Sabha to take over as Chief Minister after her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's death.
In Srinagar, National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah was the candidate against Peoples' Democratic Party's Nazir Khan in Srinagar. Seven other candidates were in fray.
The Srinagar parliamentary seat has been vacant since PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra resigned amid last year's protests following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani.
