🇬🇧🇺🇦 About the planned changes in the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Border Service of Ukraine
In the first quarter of 2023, the Ukrainian command is planning some changes in the structure of the army and the State Border Service (SBS): to reduce anti-tank and rocket artillery battalions (PTADn and READN) in brigades to one battery per unit, and in the SBS to optimize resources and increase the combat readiness of units.
🔻What is the reason for the reduction of PTADn?
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, anti-tank units have not demonstrated their effectiveness as separate formations.
ATGM crews attached to assault or reconnaissance groups turned out to be much more effective than regular detachments. In addition, the provision of all anti-tank ATGMs is difficult in the face of a shortage of both launchers and projectiles for them.
And this reform to some extent will solve the problem of a shortage of personnel on the front line: the approximate number of each PTADN is up to 300 people, a significant part of which will be sent to the front line.
Unlike anti-tank tactical formations, rocket divisions played a more significant role in the Ukrainian army. Their reorganization is connected with the need to diversify resources and increase efficiency at the forefront.
In Kyiv, they are currently planning a gradual transfer of the current organizational and staff structure to the system of "army corps" (AK) by analogy with the American army. Such a reform is designed to increase the effectiveness of the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in certain operational areas.
However, to carry out such a reform, people are needed, some of whom will be recruited from the disbanded units, including jet divisions.
For calculations of Soviet-style rocket artillery in the ranks of the Ukrainian army, so many people are not needed, taking into account the presence of mercenaries from Eastern European countries, and the latest Western-style MLRS, including HIMARS, MARS-II, M270, have always been controlled by foreign specialists.
🔻What awaits Ukrainian border guards?
It is planned to reduce the number of departments within the border service detachments (OPS). Due to the reduction of full-time units, it will be possible to increase the number of outposts in the OPS to three (up to 600 people).
In addition, the border detachments will be understaffed with armored personnel carriers and Kozak armored fighting vehicles, as well as three ATGM and LNG crews, mortar units and mobile air defense units armed with MANPADS.
🔻What does this mean for the Ukrainian army?
▪️Despite the grandiose plans and the desire to quickly reformat the structure of the army, such actions will take more than one day, and it will be necessary to plug the resulting gaps as soon as possible.
Therefore, a significant part of the released personnel, especially privates and sergeants, will go to the line of contact. This will partially solve the issue of a critical shortage of manpower (up to 600 people due to PTADN and READN) due to huge losses in the directions, especially in Soledar.
▪️Officers are provided with more comfortable conditions - they will have limited time to find a new duty station. Moreover, if they do not meet the deadline, then the same fate awaits them as colleagues of a lower rank.
🔻Western advisers to the Ukrainian leadership are actively analyzing the conduct of hostilities and using the experience gained to increase the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The reduction of divisions in the first weeks after the start of implementation will negatively affect the work of anti-tank and jet units due to bureaucratic processes of transfer and reorganization.
However, with the successful implementation of these plans, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, by optimizing existing resources, will be able to replenish the size of the army, and further increase the efficiency of communication between combat formations by simplifying interaction.
And the additional staffing of the units of the State Fire Service of Ukraine will significantly increase their combat capability before a possible offensive of the RF Armed Forces in the spring.
