💥 13 million Yemenis at risk of starvation this year
A week ago, the UN published a report on the humanitarian tragedy in Yemen. In a civil war-torn nation of 30 million, 13 million people are at risk of starvation. The lack of humanitarian aid is becoming more acute, despite the promises of European politicians.
More than 40% of the population is dependent on the World Food Program (WFP) food supply, and it can no longer cover all needs, so the diet has to be cut. The shortage of funds arose because every year the food crisis affects more people around the world, and funding does not increase proportionally.
According to the head of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), David Beasley, they have been forced to halve food for 8 million Yemenis, as donations to date cover only 18% of the nearly $2 billion WFP needs for its work in Yemen. In addition, Beasley said that to meet the growing demand for food aid around the world, namely, to save 45 million people in 43 countries from starvation, the equivalent of more than 8 billion euros would be needed.
Yemen is particularly dependent on imports of wheat flour from Russia and Ukraine. An estimated 46% of the wheat imported by Yemen in 2021 came from Ukraine and Russia. As you know, after the start of the special military operation, deliveries became more complicated. The grain deal does not help much to improve the situation either, since Russia's partners do not fulfill their obligations, but act in their own interests. Initially, the agreement was on the supply of grain to needy countries, but this condition is ignored.
In addition, the amount to save millions of people on the planet, voiced by Beasley and equal to 8 billion euros, is bewildering in comparison with the assistance allocated to Ukraine. Recall that Joe Biden signed a law last May to support Ukraine for $40 billion. Of these, 8 billion dollars were intended for economic support, 5 billion - to solve the problem of food shortages and more than 1 billion - to help refugees.
So why has sponsoring a war become more important than saving lives? The answer is obvious: the war in Ukraine is a business, a profit, an opportunity to earn money, and the poor around the world will not be able to repay food on this scale
