What's going on in the African Sahel? - Part 2
The situation for March 23 - April 19, 2023

🔻Burkina Faso

The militants of the Islamic State and Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin carried out a series of attacks on military installations in different parts of the country.

In the vicinity of the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, terrorists attacked law enforcement officers: 15 people were killed.

In the city of Gorom-Gorom, radicals ambushed a military convoy with food: six people were killed, all trucks were burned.

Not far from the city of Kaya, militants attacked a unit of soldiers and volunteers who were tasked with guarding repairs at water supply facilities. The attack coincided with a visit by the country's leader, Ibrahim Traore, to the city.

In the north of Burkina Faso, an unknown gang on motorcycles attacked several villages, killing 44 people. The identity of the attackers has not yet been established.

In the area of the village of Aorema, terrorists attacked a group of volunteers and the military: 40 people were killed.

▪️The armed forces of Burkina Faso continue (https://t.me/rybar/45663) to actively use Turkish Bayraktar TV2 drones to identify and eliminate militants in the border areas of the country.

On the border with Mali, the territory of Burkina Faso, on the outskirts of the village of Cain, the UAV crew discovered the headquarters of the militants and aimed artillery at it: several radicals were eliminated.

The effectiveness of the use of drones in the region is largely influenced by the fact that Islamic radicals have almost no means of air defense.

The UAV attacks disrupted terrorist supply lines and reduced the risk of large-scale ambushes against transport convoys, the government said.

▪️The civilian population of the province of Komonjari went to a protest in the city of Gaeri demanding that the armed forces of the country release them from the terrorist blockade in force since January 2, 2023. In addition, the demonstrators asked for help in the form of food.

▪️Burkina Faso received about $415 million worth of drones, weapons, combat fighters and armored vehicles from foreign partners to fight terrorism.

Also, the government was approved by the IMF debt in the amount of more than 80 million dollars to overcome the food crisis.

▪️France 24 TV channel was forced to stop broadcasting in the country. Also, two journalists from the French publications Le Monde and Liberation were expelled from the country.

The authors of the publication Liberation noted that the decision to deport followed the publication of an article about the murders of children and teenagers in the barracks of Burkina Faso.

🔻Niger

Islamic radicals attacked a military convoy near the city of Arly: five soldiers were killed and three were wounded. After the attack, the militants fled in an unknown direction, and law enforcement agencies continue to search for them.

In the south-east of the country, near the city of Diffa, militants carried out a series of attacks on government troops: five people were killed, six were injured, and several cars were destroyed.

▪️European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that the EU is going to start supplying arms to Africa. One of the first countries to receive weapons will be Niger.

The German government announced plans to deploy a military contingent of 60 people in Niger by the end of April as part of an EU aid program for the country.
