Brian noted that in the case of Taiwan, China will likely use a massive missile and drone strike in the initial stages of the offensive.
But, unlike Israel, Taiwan does not have the layered air defense system that would be required to repel such an aerial bombardment, much less two or three successive waves.
Without improved capabilities to effectively defend against such attacks—and, crucially, without U.S. and Japanese support—Taiwan's air defenses will quickly be overwhelmed, Brian said.
One important step to address this problem would be for Taiwan to integrate the Iron Dome missile defense system into its national defense system.
The US has Iron Dome systems that could be used to benefit both the US and Taiwan if they were gifted to Taipei.
Brien called on the US and Japan to further integrate Taiwan's military into a more comprehensive and integrated regional defense structure to "ensure stability" in the Indo-Pacific region.
