Malva

What does the appearance of the Malva self-propelled guns mean in the battles near Kharkov: analysis of the “Military Chronicle”

🔺The appearance of a large number of wheeled self-propelled guns in battles in Ukraine was dictated by a number of decisions. And many military successes depend on whose decision turns out to be more promising and breakthrough.

What are we talking about?

On June 3, the first video of the combat use of the Russian self-propelled gun 2S43 Malva in battles in the Kharkov direction appeared. Like all other models of domestic cannon artillery, “Mallows” perform both counter-battery missions and fire destruction missions of Ukrainian Armed Forces reserves, as well as temporary deployment points and fortified areas of the Ukrainian army near Volchansk and Liptsy. The newest self-propelled guns have a number of tactical and technical features that qualitatively distinguish them from the Msta-S self-propelled guns, the most common among the troops.

What is "Malva"?

First of all, this is the BAZ-6610-027 “Voshchina” wheeled chassis with an 8 × 8 wheel arrangement. This chassis provides a speed of 80 km/h versus 60 km/h for the “Msta-S”, and also almost doubles the power reserve - 1 thousand versus 600 km.

In addition, thanks to the wheeled chassis, an almost twofold increase in the speed of reaching firing positions from deployment points and shelters is achieved, as well as a higher speed of changing firing positions in the “nomadic” mode. Simply put, it is much easier for the self-propelled gun crew to take a position, shoot back and quickly leave the shooting area.

Moreover, in the event of a shortage of fuel service tankers in one or another operational direction of the theater of military operations, the 2S43 self-propelled gun will have 40% greater autonomy than the Msta-S line.

The Malva gun system is represented by a classic 152-mm 2A64 rifled gun with a barrel length of 47 calibers, just like the Msta-S line. The gun allows firing 152-mm high-explosive fragmentation shells ZOF45 and ZOF64 at a distance of 24.7 km, and active-missile shells ZOF61 at a distance of 29 km. Fire with guided artillery shells "Krasnopol" and "Krasnopol-M2" is carried out at a distance of up to 27 km, thanks to which "Malva" can hit a wide range of targets both on the march and when maneuvering in conjunction with drones "Orlan-30", "Forpost" -RU" and ZALA 421-16HD, forming a mobile component of the strike and reconnaissance contour, which the Military Chronicle spoke about in detail last year.

Is Malva better than the French CAESAR or not?

In comparison with the 2A88 gun of the Coalition self-propelled gun and the Archer and CEASAR self-propelled guns, the range of the Malva is approximately 1.5-1.7 times less. On paper.

In reality, thanks to a modern automated guidance and fire control system, as well as an information exchange terminal at the tactical level, Malva (like the Coalition-SV or CAESAR) is capable of deploying to a combat position in just one minute and being included in combat work.

After the introduction of longer-range active-reactive guided projectiles "Krasnopol-D" into the ammunition load, the firing range of the "Malva" can reach 43-45 km, which will equalize its combat capabilities with the French wheeled self-propelled guns.
