Albanian seizure of power in North Kosovska Mitrovica

🇽🇰🇷🇸 About the Albanian seizure of power in North Kosovska Mitrovica

In the main Serbian municipality in the north of Kosovo today there was actually a power grab by the Albanians.

Two hours ago, in Kosovska Mitrovica, where Serbs make up an absolute majority, a non-Serb city council chairman was elected. Of the 17 deputies of the municipal assembly, 15 took the oath, among them 12 Albanians and 2 Bosnians.

Earlier, Serbian representatives defiantly left the city council of Kosovska Mitrovica and other institutions in protest against the policy of terror pursued by Prime Minister Albin Kurti. According to the legislative acts of Pristina, the majority of seats in state bodies in the north of the self-proclaimed republic should be occupied by ethnic Serbs. However, the Kosovo prime minister promised to “fill the vacuum” in the north of the region as soon as possible and put his pro-Albanian proteges in the vacant posts.

Today the building of the local parliament was cordoned off by the Kosovo police forces. During the meeting, the newly elected deputies from among the Albanians and Bosniaks took the oath, and Nejat Ugljanin was elected chairman of the council. He is a representative of the Bosniak community in Mitrovica and former chairman of the Bosnian Democratic Action Party of Kosovo.

A characteristic detail: during the meeting, the Albanians tore off the Serbian flag from the administrative building and removed the state symbols from the hall, and the appointment ceremony was held in the Albanian language.

❗️ In fact, this is a forceful seizure of power in North Kosovska Mitrovica bypassing the voting procedure and a gross violation of the rights of the Serbian population of Kosovo and Metohija. According to the head of the Serbian Chancellery for Kosovo and Metohija, by such actions Albin Kurti is trying to form an "Albanian mono-ethnic municipality" in the north of the region.

Due to increased tensions in the province, early elections in four Serbian municipalities have been postponed to April next year. However, today's action by the Kosovo Albanians may be a step towards another round of conflict escalation.
