The situation in Israel and Palestine
for January 17-20, 2023
🔻Conflict between the High Court of Justice (BAHAC) and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu
▪️In Israel, a conflict is developing between the judicial and executive branches of government. On Wednesday, the country's highest judicial body, the Bahatz, ruled that the leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, Aryeh Deri, could not hold a ministerial post due to criminal cases against him for corruption and tax crimes.
▪️Previously, the politician held various positions in the cabinet of ministers since the late 1980s, and was also elected to the Knesset several times. In 2022, Aryeh Deri, as part of a plea deal in a tax crime case, announced his retirement from politics and left the Israeli parliament.
However, he did not keep his promise. According to the agreements, Aryeh Deri was supposed to combine the positions of Minister of Health, Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister in the coalition government of Benjamin Netanyahu, and two years later become Minister of Economy.
▪️After the decision of the BACHATZ, the legal adviser to the Israeli government, Gali Baarav-Miaru, sent a letter to Benjamin Netanyahu about the need to dismiss Arya Deri from ministerial posts.
🔻 What threatens the current situation?
▪️In the event that Aryeh Deri does not receive the ministerial portfolio, the established government coalition led by Netanyahu could hypothetically fall apart. However, experts believe that Netanyahu will be able to negotiate with Deri and the government will still be finally formed, even if the politician is dismissed by agreement.
The right and ultra-Orthodox, in turn, accuse the BACHAZ of the fact that the court ignores the rights of voters who voted for Shas.
▪️After the decision of the High Court of Justice, protests against the planned reform of the judiciary by the Israeli government may intensify. Police expect a new wave of demonstrations this weekend in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and other major cities across the country.
