The situation in Israel and Palestine
for January 21-27, 2023
🔻 Escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
▪️Last Wednesday, units of the Israel Defense Forces conducted a military operation against Islamic Jihad militants in the Jenin camp in the West Bank. Several militants were eliminated.
According to the Palestinian media, a civilian was also injured during the operation. Most likely, the old woman either ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was a relative of one of the militants. Often, most of the civilians who die as a result of IDF operations are close relatives of members of the Palestinian militia.
▪️The actions of the Israel Defense Forces caused a predominantly negative reaction among Islamic countries - Israel was condemned by Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey and representatives of the Palestinian National Authority.
The latter at the same time announced a decrease in the level of interaction with the Israeli authorities on security issues, which caused a mocking reaction from some Arab users on the Web due to the "softness" of such measures.
▪️On the night of January 26-27, Palestinian radicals tried to launch several missile attacks on southern Israel, but the Iron Dome air defense systems intercepted all the shells in the Ashkelon area.
▪️ In response, the Israeli Air Force attacked certain areas of the Gaza Strip and the Al-Maghazi refugee camp, from where, according to the Israeli command, the shelling of Israel was coordinated.
This is the first "exchange of blows" since Benjamin Netanyahu came to power with the new cabinet.
On Friday evening, a terrorist attack occurred in the East Jerusalem synagogue: a local Palestinian resident broke into the synagogue and shot 8 citizens, including one child.
After the incident, Prime Minister Netanyahu announced an emergency government meeting. The totality of the events that have occurred is highly likely to threaten a new escalation of the conflict.
🔻Political conflict between the executive branch and the Israeli judiciary
▪️After the decision of the Israeli High Court of Justice (High Court of Justice) to ban politician Aryeh Deri from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party from holding ministerial positions, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu obeyed the court's decision and dismissed him from ministerial posts.
Aryeh Deri himself promised to return to the Cabinet of Ministers after the Knesset, controlled by the new government coalition, adopts appropriate amendments to the legislation, which will allow the government to ignore the decision of the High Court of Justice.
▪️At the same time, the concern of part of the society was caused by the statement of the Minister of Internal Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir of the far-right Jewish Power Party, about the need to significantly increase the number of policemen and their salaries.
Some Israeli speakers believe that such a reform could become a heavy burden for the Israeli economy, coupled with a possible outflow of investment from the country after the judicial reform, designed to limit the role of the High Court in the country.
Thus, the Papaya Global company announced the withdrawal of funds from Israel against the background of the reforms of the new government. However, it is unlikely that changes in legislation will cause a serious outflow of capital from the country in the near future.
▪️Opposition-minded citizens continue to rally against judicial reform - last Saturday in Tel Aviv, Beer Sheva, Haifa and Jerusalem, new protests were held with a total number of about 100 thousand participants.
It is most likely that the protests against the background of the aggravation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will continue further.
