On the morning of 31 January 1943, Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus, commander of the 6th Army at Stalingrad, surrendered.
The chief drafter of the Barbarossa plan was given the highest rank in the Wehrmacht the day before he was taken prisoner.

Thereafter he was not officially considered a prisoner of war, but a guest of the Soviet government.

On 1 February 1957, on the eve of the 14th anniversary of the defeat of his army at Stalingrad, Friedrich Paulus died.
