🇺🇸🇲🇽🇨🇦 On North American Leaders' Summit 2023
Part 1
On January 10, North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS) took place (https://t.me/CIG_telegram/26526) in Mexico. The heads of the U.S., Mexico and Canada met to discuss the issues on the agenda. The results are not surprising – but it would be exciting to monitor the situation.
The first NALS summit took place in 2005. No summits were held during Trump's presidency, as he expressed no desire to have a dialogue with his colleagues. After Biden's inauguration, the summits resumed - in 2021, it was held in Washington.
◾️ Biden arrived in Mexico on Jan. 8, and he flew - at Obrador's personal request – to Felipe Ángeles International Airport opened last March. Apparently, the Mexican leader is doing his best to raise the prestige of the airport as it was his initiative to construct it on the basis of the former military base.
◾️ On January 9, the two leaders were in high spirits during the opening ceremony, and the meeting itself started in that same mood. According to official sources, migration and border security were the main topics to be discussed. Nevertheless, Luis Obrador expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Latin American and Caribbean countries felt "disdained" and "abandoned" by the United States.
Biden objected that the U.S. "responsibility does not end with the Western Hemisphere" and referred to the "billions of dollars" that the United States spends on foreign aid around the world.
◾️ However, the meeting ended positively. Obrador referred to Biden a "visionary President" and "the first president of the United States in a very long time who has not built even one meter of wall."
Trudeau joined the two leaders on Jan. 11.
◾️ The three heads of state held a press conference after the summit to announce the outcome of their talks:
🔸 according to Biden, the alliance of the three leaders agreed to invest in the supply chains of crucial minerals – semiconductors such as lithium – to ensure "the creation of the technology of the future in North America." In response, Trudeau pledged that Canada would not only mine the mineral, but also improve lithium battery technology. The politicians agreed to organize a forum on semiconductors with industry and government officials in early 2023 and to coordinate efforts to identify needs and investments in the semiconductor supply chain;
🔸 Lopez Obrador announced that the three countries have agreed to create an ad hoc committee of 12 experts from the three countries (four candidates from each of the three states) to replace imports to North America from Asia. Trudeau and Biden did not name possible applicants, while Obrador said that from Mexico the committee will include Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Finance Minister Rogelio Ramirez de la O, Economy Minister Raquel Buenrostro and businessman Alfonso Romo;
🔸 AMLO thanked both colleagues for helping to welcome and employ thousands of Mexican migrants, particularly under the U.S. program allowing up to 30,000 migrants (https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-planning-visit-us-mexico-border-2023-01-04) from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti and Canada issuing temporary work visas to 25,000 Mexican migrants;
🔸 the U.S. also insists that Mexico do more to combat fentanyl trafficking, much of which is produced by Mexican cartels and then smuggled into the United States;
🔸 Canada has expressed willingness to assist security forces in Haiti, where the lack of a functioning government has led to a crisis -- rampant banditry, fuel shortages and a cholera outbreak.On North American Leaders' Summit 2023

📌 What are the possible outcomes?
The result of the summit came as no surprise – the leaders said just what they had planned to say. Obviously, AMLO wants to make friends with the U.S. – and to make any possible profit from this friendship.
In turn, Biden pretends he’s trying to resolve the migration issue. Chatting with the Mexican pal is almost free and doesn’t compromise his reputation among other Democrats.
Canada seems to be the least influential participant as Trudeau is ready to support any point of view that would seem to provide him with political stability. He would call the POTUS his buddy buddy as far as they have at least anything in common.
