Situation for March 4-23, 2023

Tensions remain in the Central African Republic (https://t.me/rybar/44220) against the backdrop of regular attacks by armed groups on government troops and Wagner PMC units supporting them.

Significant public outcry was caused by an attack by an unknown group on a gold mine in the village of Chimbolo, as a result of which nine Chinese citizens were killed. Representatives of foreign countries strongly condemned the attack and called for the culprits to be found and punished as soon as possible.

🔻Battle Showdown

▪️In the northeastern prefecture of Vakaga, an armed group took hostage Cardinal Dieudonne Nzapalinga in the village of Ouanda Jalle. At the moment, operational-search activities have not been successful.

▪️In the east, the armed forces attacked the positions of extremists in the area of the city of Bambuti: under their onslaught, the rebels retreated, and the settlement came under the control of the government of the republic.

▪️In the center of the country in the Kemo prefecture, the rural commune of Wawa fell under the blow of the rebels: four civilians were killed, five more were injured. In turn, the government troops who arrived in the incident zone liquidated about ten militants.

An improvised explosive device went off in the Grimari area, seriously injuring one soldier. Law enforcement officials are looking for people involved in the explosion.

▪️In the west of the Central African Republic in the Nana-Mambere prefecture, supporters of the 3R group abducted three Chinese citizens in the area of the city of Abba, who were employees of a mining company. The kidnappers demanded a ransom for their release, but the government intends to rescue the hostages on its own.

To the northeast, militants ambushed a truck transporting goods and passengers from the city of Paua: several civilians were injured of varying degrees of severity.

🔻Incident with the killing of Chinese citizens

▪️In the central part of the country, at a gold mine in the village of Chimbolo, unknown militants killed nine Chinese citizens, two more were injured.

Local authorities said the search for the attackers was ongoing but declined to provide any details related to the incident.

Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded that every effort be made to find and punish the criminals, as well as to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in the CAR. The Russian Foreign Ministry also strongly condemned the attack.

▪️The militants of one of the most numerous and dangerous groups, UPC Ali Darassa, are still operating on the territory. Terrorists often attack Chinese and European workers for hostage and ransom, but sometimes this leads to clashes with mass casualties.

🔻Internal political situation

▪️For two weeks, a strike of teachers continued on the territory of the republic, demanding higher wages and better working conditions.

The heart of the unrest was the capital of Bangui, where several cases of riots and violence were recorded, including against schoolchildren. According to local media, there are victims among civilians.

To stabilize the situation, CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra met with the teachers' union and instructed the government to reach a compromise as soon as possible. In turn, the leaders of the protesters decided to suspend the strike and resume classes.

▪️In Bangui, on the occasion of International Women's Day, a rally in support of Russia was held at the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The demonstrators expressed gratitude for the restoration of peace and stability, and also accused the United States of interfering in the internal affairs of the republic.

Two weeks later, a pro-Russian march was also held in the capital, in which about two thousand people took part. Local residents carried a banner through the streets of the city with the inscription "Russia is Wagner, we love Russia, and we love Wagner."
