What's going on in Nigeria?
The situation for April 4 - 11, 2023

Over the past week in Nigeria, militants have carried out a series of attacks on civilians and military personnel in various parts of the country, kidnapping and killing several dozen people. Due to the weakness of local law enforcement agencies, in most cases, criminals avoid capture or liquidation.

In turn, government troops continue (https://t.me/rybar/45440) to conduct special operations in the southeastern state of Borno. However, their actions at the moment are not enough to solve the problems of regional security.

🔻Battle Showdown

The abduction of at least 60 civilians from farmlands in the communities of Zamfara and Katsina caused significant public outcry in Nigeria.

The gangs have asked for $30 million for the return of the hostages. At the moment, fundraising is underway, at the same time, security officers are searching for those involved in the incident.

▪️The most difficult situation remains in the northeastern state of Borno: the militants made several attacks on the positions of government troops. The armed forces responded with a series of raids to destroy terrorist bases.

Supporters of the local branch of the "Islamic State" attacked the location of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the city of Monguno: government troops managed to repel the attack, the militants retreated with losses.

Radical Islamists attacked civilian facilities and barracks in the settlements of Njimtilo, Puka, Kainuva and Ajeri. More than 20 civilians were killed.

In the area of the city of Bama, the Nigerian military identified a camp of Boko Haram militants involved in the attack on the local government district of Garin Baaba. During the battle, the security forces managed to destroy at least 18 radicals.

▪️In the southeastern state of Benue, armed groups attacked the local government of Oturkpo and killed at least 46 civilians, including women and children.

A similar attack took place in the local government area of Gama. There, 38 people died at the hands of criminals, 37 more were injured. The number of victims could be much higher, as several dozen residents are still missing.

▪️The systematic killing of civilians continues in Nigeria's major cities. Three people were killed in Lagos, an officer at a checkpoint was shot dead in Port Harcourt, and a police officer was killed in Ikoroda.

🔻Internal political situation

▪️Supporters of the People's Democratic Party took part in a protest (https://t.me/rybar/45167) against the results of the general elections in Port Harcourt: the protesters call for a full review of the activities of the election commissions.

In turn, members of the ruling All-Progressive Congress Party demanded to reject individual opposition petitions challenging Ahmed Tinubu's victory (https://t.me/rybar/44097) in the presidential race.

▪️Two rallies were held in the southern state of Delta. Several hundred residents came out to protest against law enforcement abuses in Asaba. In the local government of Varri North, activists demanded the completion of the construction of transport infrastructure in the region.

▪️Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed accused Labor Party candidate Peter Obi of treason over calls to contest the results of the vote.

Obi rejected all the accusations against him and noted that this is another attempt by the authorities to get rid of a bright political competitor.

▪️The leader of the rebel movement "Indigenous peoples of Biafra (https://t.me/rybar/44517)" Simon Ekpa announced his election as Prime Minister of the government in exile and called on the international community to recognize the independence of Biafra.

Rebel supporters also appealed to all members of the Igbo people, asking them to return to Nigeria before the general census. According to the separatists, this will allow to determine the population of Biafra.
