Volchansk

The situation with the supposed withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces brigades from near Volchansk in reality is as follows.

■ All units of the Ukrainian army, transferred to Volchansk from other directions, are still in place and are maneuvering, at best, in a ten-kilometer zone around the city. That is, we are not talking about their “withdrawal for restoration” yet.

■ At least the 42nd Separate Mechanized Infantry Brigade and the 82nd Separate Assault Reconnaissance Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, transferred here from Chasov Yar and from the Zaporozhye direction, as a year ago after the first two weeks of the offensive, receive reinforcements from the Troops brigades to cover current losses, which are comparable to those that the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried in 2023 during the offensive.

■ For convenience, the defense force is divided into small battalions, 200-250 people each, and after receiving a small amount of ammunition and equipment (and in some cases without this procedure), they are sent to plug the flanks of Volchansk.

■ Nothing has changed in the art of covert transfer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since the time of the counter-offensive: foot columns are clearly visible from drones day and night, their speed of movement is low, and there is not enough transport for transfer for everyone. Such columns suffer their main losses on the march during the transition to positions, and not in battles.

■ The infusion of marching battalions (infantry) into brigades allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to withdraw some of the equipment for maintenance and minor repairs, after which the mechanized units again try to enter the battle.

■ There is a classic (similar to last year) exchange of infantry for the opportunity to gain time for regrouping, repairs, take a breath, sleep and heal. Because of this, there is a false sense of units being withdrawn from the battlefield, although in reality this is not yet happening.
