Spain’s constitutional court has suspended a resolution by Catalonia calling a referendum on independence next year.
The constitutional court said in its statement it “suspends... the resolution of Catalonia's parliament that plans a referendum in 2017”.
Most likely, a referendum would be held despite the banning decision. However, after this referendum Catalonia would decide on independence, although most residents traditionally will vote for secession from Spain. In Catalonia, similar referendums have been already passed, but they had a more symbolic character.
