As a result of persistent onshore flow over the past several days, SJCFR Marine Rescue has noticed an increase in Man-O-War on the beaches. If you plan on visiting the beaches this weekend please be on the lookout for these animals both in the water and on the shoreline as their tentacles can deliver a painful sting.
See below for some basic information on the Man-O-War:
Man-O-War are not jellyfish, but an animal made up of a colony of organisms known as a Siphonophore. It is most prevalent on the Florida east coast from November to March. They consist of a blue colored bladder-like balloon with tentacles, which reach out below the surface of the water up to 40 feet long. Coming into contact with the tentacles can cause a painful sting lasting 2 hours.
Treatment– If you are stung, peel or wipe the tentacles off as quickly as possible. Apply vinegar or warm water to the affected
area. Seek further aid from lifeguards or call 911 if you are susceptible to allergic reactions from insect stings.
Brian Hodge Yes it is, you found it on the beach and thought it was a balloon. You went crazy and luckily the life guard station had meat tenderizer. If they are in the water up there and you go to the beach always take a bottle of adolph's meat tenderizer in case you get stung. Make it into a paste by adding water. If you don't have that you can also pee in a cup and use that. Doesn't work as fast , but it works.
