About the Russia-Iran Trade Corridor
The Russian and Iranian governments are investing up to $25 billion in the implementation of the North-South transport corridor. The operation of the new route will significantly facilitate the delivery of Russian goods to world markets, primarily in Asia.
The transcontinental route runs from Eastern Europe to the Indian Ocean, has a length of 3000 kilometers and is actually protected from external influences. Many Iranian merchant ships, including those under sanctions, are already plying the new route in the Caspian Sea.
▪️What was the reason for creating a new path? Economic pressure from the West on Russia and Iran prompted the leaderships of both countries to create a separate corridor focused on the growing economies of Asia and independent of the influence of Western states. The new route promises huge benefits for both Russia and Iran if successfully implemented. Transiting through the Caspian Sea and Iran will save thousands of kilometers, unlike the Mediterranean Sea, and will actually neutralize the sanctions pressure on both countries. ▪️Economic side of the project Today, the main volume of goods supplied along the North-South corridor is energy and agricultural products. Iranian companies are the third largest importers of Russian grain. And the range of supplied goods is constantly growing. Deliveries of turbines, polymer products, medical equipment, spare parts for cars have already been announced. Russia supplies nuclear fuel and equipment for the Iranian nuclear power plant in Bushehr. Yes, there are some problems. As, for example, periodically occurring traffic jams in the passage of ships through the Volga-Don canal due to the presence of narrow sections of the highway. However, this problem is already being solved: the Russian side plans to invest $1 billion to increase the passability of the water transit hub. 🔻However, the development of a project of this magnitude will not go unnoticed by potential victims of the organization of a new corridor. What could be the problem? The conflict in Ukraine was used, first of all, for the complete blockade and isolation of Russia from the outside world, as well as the weakening of the economies of European states and the reorientation of financial flows from Europe to the United States. The developing cooperation between Iran and Russia and the emergence of uncontrolled trade communications in the future may become a serious threat to the economic hegemony of the West led by the United States. In the future, the transport corridor can serve as a precedent for similar actions for other countries of the world in conducting an independent policy. 🔻Perspectives The North-South corridor, if implemented, will allow Russian companies to largely compensate for the break in commercial ties with Europe and circumvent some of the sanctions. The use of the old routes is now impossible: Western countries completely control the main sea routes due to restrictions on entry into ports, insurance of ships and cargo. And traffic over landlines is quite difficult to track and control. Therefore, in the current conditions, Russia's natural turn to the East through unification with Iran is a completely logical decision. 🔻However, creating a new transport route comes with risks and costs. Firstly, because of the potential financial costs and time for infrastructure construction. In addition, the successful functioning of the "North-South" largely depends on whether the countries of Asia, the Middle East and Africa join the "sanctions" path of Russia and Iran. And the US and allies will make every effort to disrupt the implementation of the route. Against the backdrop of a general prolongation of the conflict in Ukraine, there will be attempts to destabilize the situation in Iran and the Caucasus, and the implementation of the Zangezur Corridor project (https://t.me/rybar/40658), which is essentially a competitive transcontinental transit line, will be accelerated, but in this case controlled by the West.
