The situation in Israel and Palestine
January 10-16, 2023
🔻Clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians
▪️Israeli military personnel continue to conduct raids in the West Bank settlements as part of a campaign to search for and detain members of Palestinian groups.
Over the past week, security forces have entered Nablus, Jenin, Hebron, the Balata refugee camp and other places of residence of the Arab population, which are not under the full control of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
▪️The actions of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expectedly led to skirmishes with local residents. Since the beginning of the year, 12 Palestinians have already died in clashes: for example, on January 14, while trying to fire on a military vehicle in the city of Jaba, two men were killed (https://t.me/rybar/42745), who turned out to be members of the Islamic Jihad group. The recent return of Benjamin Netanyahu to the post of prime minister added fuel to the fire. The politician has already stated (https://twitter.com/netanyahu/status/1608039943817007105) that one of the key areas of his policy will be to support Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories in the West Bank. 🔻Israeli opposition protests A series of demonstrations took place in the country against the reforms proposed by the new government of Netanyahu. Citizens who gathered on January 14 in Tel Aviv, Haiva, Beer Sheva and Jerusalem opposed a package of measures that would allow the government and parliament to further influence the judiciary. In the capital alone, about 80,000 people took to the rally. ▪️The proposed legislative changes will limit the powers of Israel's supreme judicial body and its control over the country's budget, and the executive branch will be able to interfere in the selection of judges. In this case, the ruling coalition will have the opportunity to overturn the decisions of the Supreme Court by a simple majority of votes. ▪️The opposition also fears the strengthening of authoritarianism in the country: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to power for the sixth time. He has formed a coalition that, in addition to his Likud party, also includes several far-right factions with corresponding beliefs. For example, Itamar Ben-Gvir, from the Otsma Yehudit party, became the Minister of Internal Security. In the past, he was convicted of incitement to racism, and in his youth, the politician did participate in the activities of the Jewish extremist organization Kach. ▪️Left activists also accuse Netanyahu of inciting hostility towards the Palestinians. In their opinion, the new sanctions against the PNA and the policy of supporting Jewish settlements in the West Bank will lead to another round of interethnic conflict. 🔻Other events ➖In Tel Aviv, in addition to opposition protests, there are rallies (https://twitter.com/Nissim_Sofer/status/1614702139699351558) of supporters of ultra-Orthodox Jewish movements. They oppose the sale of telephones with Internet access to members of conservative Jewish communities. On January 13, representatives of the Lebanese armed forces reported that an Israeli drone flew into the airspace in the south of the country. Army units opened fire, but failed to bring down the drone.
