The French army finally left Burkina Faso

The French army finally left Burkina Faso On the afternoon of February 19, the last group of French troops left (https://t.me/africaintel/1889) the Bila Zagre military camp in the northeast of the capital of Burkina Faso. Aviation was withdrawn at the beginning of the month, so the Ukrainian An-124 took out the French for the last week, performing 1-2 flights a day. Why did the French leave?

Relations between the governments of Burkina Faso and the Fifth Republic escalated after the military coup (https://t.me/rybar/39617) in September 2022, which was caused by the failed tactics to combat terrorists and the pro-French position of the authorities against the backdrop of anti-colonial sentiments in society . The formal reason for the withdrawal of troops was the denunciation by the new government of Burkina Faso of the treaty that regulated the presence of French armed forces in the country, and the active growth of anti-French propaganda. ▪️At the end of 2022, a wave of protests swept Burkina Faso (https://t.me/rybar/41325). Against the background of the deteriorating security situation, people began to demand that the authorities act like Mali. Authorities in Bamako are publicly moving away from France, which is accused of being inactive and supporting terrorist groups, and moving closer to Russia. Shortly thereafter, rumors began to circulate about the appearance of Wagner PMCs in Burkina Faso. ▪️At the same time, despite the withdrawal of the military contingent, France still retains (https://www.aa.com.tr/en/analysis/analysis-migration-colonial-past-military-interventions-economic-ties-how-big -is-france-in-africa/2755543) economic leverage on the authorities in Ouagadougou. (https://www.aa.com.tr/en/analysis/analysis-migration-colonial-past-military-interventions-economic-ties-how-big-is-france-in-africa/2755543) 🔻What's next? The Wagnerites have already started (https://t.me/rybar/42109) to work on the territory, but the government of Burkina Faso still denies this fact. ▪️Cooperation with Wagner PMC, which is already active in Mali, seems like a logical decision. Opposing terrorists in the “zone of three borders” from two sides will become much easier in the future. ▪️If Wagnerites expand their activities in the region, the question will arise of optimizing logistics, for which a large port is desirable. For example, along with aviation, the Cameroonian port of Douala is actively used to supply Russian forces in the CAR. In this regard, the "company" needs to win positions in Ghana, Togo or Benin - the neighbors of Burkina Faso, where there are similar ports and there is also a threat of terrorism. However, the authorities of all three countries are pro-French, and the protest activity there is incomparably lower than in Mali or Burkina Faso. So it is unlikely that it will be possible to enter these countries on the wave of coup d'état. 🔻The authorities in Ouagadougou have recently faced particularly fierce resistance from radical Islamists. Therefore, now the government's main attention is focused on finding new allies and purchasing weapons, including the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 UAVs. Along with this, the militia is being mobilized: it is important for the population to see an active fight against terrorism, unlike the one that was before. The current military regime has a year and a half before the next elections to justify its tactics.
