What's going on in Somalia?
situation for March 9-16, 2023

The offensive and special operations of the armed forces of Somalia failed (https://t.me/rybar/44378) to weaken the combat capability of the Al-Shabab group affiliated with Al-Qaeda: Islamic radicals carried out a series of coordinated attacks on military bases and administrative buildings in central and southern regions of the country.

The parties are preparing for the second phase of hostilities. Government troops are preparing for a new large-scale offensive in the autonomous formation of Jubaland. In turn, the supporters of the group respond by killing servicemen and officials.

🔻Battle Showdown

▪️ Al-Shabaab militants carried out a series of attacks on military bases and positions of the Somali National Army in the south of the country, including in the Bay administrative region and the autonomous entity of Jubaland.

The place of deployment of military personnel near the city of Guf Gaduad came under attack. Reinforcements of government troops arrived in time and were able to push the radical Islamists back to their original positions, several people were injured.

In the province of Lower Jubba, militants stormed (https://t.me/rybar/44533) a military base in the vicinity of the city of Janai Abdalle: at least 89 servicemen were killed, about 20 cars were seized. The Ministry of Defense of Somalia reported that the attack was repulsed, however, through the controlled media, the group provided footage of the terrorists at the facility.

The Somali National Army responded by conducting a series of special operations to destroy hidden al-Shabaab camps in the affected regions. In the autonomous formation of Jubaland, more than eight militants were eliminated, several more were injured and captured.

▪️In the central regions of Somalia, supporters of the group carried out an attack on government officials, in particular the heads of regions. In Buerduubo, an explosive device was planted in the house of the mayor of the city Nuh Hasan Daud: the official was injured, his son died.

In Bardera, terrorists blew up a car bomb in front of the government building during a meeting of federal and regional authorities with the commanders of the armed forces. After blowing up the car, militants fired mortars at the site of the attack: more than 12 people died, several dozen were injured.

▪️The most difficult situation remains in Mogadishu. Over the past ten days, militants have attacked administrative buildings, shopping malls, motorcades of government officials, military bases and residential buildings.

Regular raids by special services almost do not bring results due to the presence of "moles" within the organization. In the course of another check of the security forces for links with Al-Shabaab, law enforcement agencies arrested and then executed three people on suspicion of having links with terrorists.

🔻Situation in Somaliland

▪️The intensity of fighting in the Lasanoda region has decreased. Additional units of local clans have arrived in the city; in the near future they will be able to take part in the attack on the positions of the Somaliland Armed Forces.

▪️The leadership of the unrecognized republic continues to insist on the support of the rebels by the armed forces of Puntland.

▪️A UN delegation arrived in Garowe to establish the facts of war crimes of the parties during the hostilities.

🔻Foreign policy contacts

▪️Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Noor met with Chinese Ambassador Fei Shengchao. They discussed issues of strengthening bilateral relations, development of peace and security in the region.

▪️Additional units of the Ethiopian armed forces arrived in the country to participate in a joint operation against Al-Shabab.

▪️The Government of the United Arab Emirates delivered 800 tons of aid to Mogadishu to citizens affected by drought and conflict.
