Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque

There is no doubt that Iran has a wealth of valuable historical and cultural sites, one of the most famous of which is the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. Situated in the historic city of Isfahan, it is an outstanding legacy of the Safavid era (1501-1736 CE), with rich ornamentation and deep symbolic meaning and message. Built by Abbas I, the building faithfully reflects a central attribute of Islamic architecture: the close relationship between art and cosmology. This means that Islamic architecture, and in particular its artistic expression, has as its primary goal the thoughtful representation and perception of the place and role of humanity within the universe. And this is precisely phenomenological starting point that permeates the spirit of place (genius loci) to its very core. The mosque, which can be called the shining star of tile art, opened in 1619 CE, and was named after Sheikh Lotfollah, a Muslim scholar of great renown. #archaeohistories
