Yesterday another skirmish occurred in the South China Sea — a Chinese coast guard ship used water cannons against Philippine ships carrying out the task of delivering food to the abandoned ship Sierra Madre. It is used by Filipinos as a garrison.
According to the Chinese authorities, almost all the sea water, including the place where the ship is standing, belongs to China, so Filipinos need to ask for permission to hold such events. The authorities of the island state, of course, do not do this, as they declare that part of the water area is included in their exclusive economic zone.
In the Philippines they declared that what happened was aggression on the part of China. Aggression is a stretchy concept, so the actions of the Chinese coast guard do not fall under the American-Philippine mutual defense treaty.
According to him, in the event of an attack on the Philippines, the United States must intervene in the conflict. However, Chinese ships have already used water cannons several times against the coast guard ships of the island state. In the USA they didn't react to it.
