What's happening in Myanmar?
situation as of December 17, 2023
In Myanmar, the intensity of fighting has decreased slightly due to an agreement on a temporary ceasefire. However, fighting continues in some areas: the last two days of clashes were observed in five states of the country.
🔻In Shan State, Taang National Liberation Army militants conducted a successful raid in the Namkama area, capturing three soldiers and seizing small arms and ammunition.
However, the initiative in the state bordering China has passed to government troops, who are launching massive attacks on militant positions in Namsang, Muse, Kutkan and Mile 105, using both artillery and Mi-35P helicopters.
🔻Intense clashes continue on the border of the states of Sikaing and Mandalay. Members of ethnic groups attack Myanmar military positions near Chang U, Naipukone and Madai. According to the latest data, seven servicemen have already died.
🔻In southern and southwestern Myanmar, militant groups unsuccessfully attempted to occupy several government installations in Rakhine and Pegu states, attacking government troops in Mrau U and Pyu. In Maungdaw, the Myanmar Armed Forces hit a cluster of Arakanese.
Attempts (primarily on the part of the PRC) to calm the warring factions have not yet yielded the desired results. Clashes continue, albeit with less intensity. But even this already increases the chances of at least partially extinguishing the conflict and getting closer to resolving disagreements.
