What is happening on the battlefield in the Gaza Strip: analysis of Military Chronicle

The IDF continues its offensive on the enclave's neighborhoods, while Hamas continues to offer fierce resistance. Intense fighting is taking place in devastated Gaza, and the materials published by the parties provide an opportunity to observe and identify interesting features of urban battles.

Which ones?

After almost three months, the parties continue to adhere to the same tactics that were used at the beginning of the ground operation.

For Hamas, this is due to the technical lag behind the Israeli army and the resources and technologies available to them. In essence, Hamas continues to play to its strengths, such as local knowledge, motivation, and cheap and repeatable weapons.

Hamas infantry launches ambushes on Israeli armored vehicles. Apparently, equipment not covered by infantry is chosen deliberately. For movement, passages inside city blocks or underground communications are used. Such tactics reduce the IDF's advantage in aerial reconnaissance, from UAVs to satellites.

In particular, in the published video, the Merkava Mk.4 tank is attacked using anti-tank grenade launchers with tandem shots, fire contact occurs at a distance of less than 100 m, and shelling is carried out from a building with visual control from another point.

What is remarkable about the shelling of the Merkava Mk.4?

The tank is equipped with the Trophy active protection complex. At the very beginning of the video, it is clearly visible that after a shot at an Israeli tank, the launcher of the Trophy active protection complex reacts to the shot and turns towards the flying grenade, but the system does not have time to apply countermeasures. True, from the recording it is impossible to state with certainty whether the tank was damaged.

In any case, we see a rather rare case of shelling of a tank with an active KAZ.

What else can be stated?

At the very beginning of the video there is an episode where Israeli soldiers are clearly visible inside an armored personnel carrier or infantry fighting vehicle. Apparently, Israelis use electronic maps for navigation, but their effectiveness is questionable.

As a result of the fighting, a significant part of the buildings, roads and city blocks were destroyed, which makes pre-war maps practically useless. In turn, Palestinians use their own communications: underground tunnels, passages inside destroyed buildings, courtyards and other elements of urban development. It can also be assumed that, if necessary, they can pave new paths.

Overall, the fighting in Gaza highlights both the IDF's difficulty in controlling the territory through surveillance technology and the reduced effectiveness of aerial and satellite reconnaissance.
