A New York appeals court on Wednesday rejected Donald Trump's request for a stay of judgment in his $464 million fraud case, meaning the former president now faces hundreds of millions of dollars in bail over the coming weeks.
Judge Anil Singh declined to comment on the amount of bail requested, hinting that Trump must post bail for the full amount of the judgment - $454 million.
Defense attorneys said Trump was willing to post $100 million bail, arguing there was no way he could get more without selling off some of his properties.
Judge Singh agreed to temporarily halt enforcement of part of the court's order that would bar Trump and his sons from running the family business for years to come. The decision allows former President Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump to remain at the helm of the Trump Organization.
The decision is temporary and will be referred to the full First Department panel of the Appellate Division.
Earlier, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron found Trump, his adult sons and two former Trump Organization executives responsible for a decade of fraudulent activity, including using fraud to increase capital and obtain better lending terms. He ordered the defendants to pay $464 million in damages for illicit enrichment and interest pending a final judgment.
