Anomalous activity of Rivet Joint strategic intelligence officers near Crimea

At these moments, the creation of an expanded radio-technical and electronic intelligence circuit of the US and British Air Forces is being recorded in the Crimea region. The key aircraft are the strategic radio-technical and electronic reconnaissance aircraft RC-135V Rivet Joint with the call sign JAKE17 of the US Air Force and the similar British RC-135W Rivet Joint with the call sign RRR7220.

Both vehicles entered patrol lines over the eastern regions of Romania, as well as over the Black Sea. On board each is installed an AEELS passive electronic reconnaissance complex based on two phased antenna arrays, a high-precision CS-2010 Hawk radio direction finder for detailing the coordinates of the radiation source, as well as an ES-182 MUCELS electronic reconnaissance complex.

Using the first two complexes, operators detect radiation-based radars of anti-aircraft missile systems and electronic warfare systems, identify their modifications and operating modes, after which they can determine their low-altitude viewing areas by overlaying topographic maps. Thus, the US and British Air Forces are preparing flight missions for SCALP-EG missiles and Ukrainian UAVs to skirt the operating zones of Russian air defense systems. The reconnaissance depth of the AEELS and Hawk complexes usually reaches 460-500 km for ground targets and up to 700-1000 km for tactical aircraft with radar enabled.

The ES-182 MUCELS complexes are designed to detect and decrypt communication channels, as well as exchange data at the tactical level.

Consequently, the simultaneous appearance of two aircraft of this type near Crimea may indicate the preparation of another large-scale attack of UAVs and cruise missiles on the peninsula, because to accompany the attack a much larger volume of radio-technical information about air defense systems is needed.

Also operating in this direction is the ARTEMIS aerial radio-technical and electronic reconnaissance platform based on the Bombardier Challenger 650 business jet. The functions of the equipment placed on board are similar to those installed on board the Rivet Joint.
