What you need to understand about the statement about 14 brigades in reserve for a future offensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces

Where did these numbers come from?

It is likely that 14 brigades are the total combat-ready reserve of the Armed Forces of Ukraine/NSU at the moment. It is possible that these units are not located anywhere in particular, but are dispersed among facilities on the territory of Ukraine.

Is this a real number?

Considering how serious the mobilization is in Ukraine, the figure may be underestimated. With a three-battalion brigade structure, a reserve of 14 brigades is only 35 thousand people. It is difficult to say how much the figure may be underestimated, but, according to some independent estimates, the total reserve of all military/paramilitary units, including numerous TrO forces, may be about 90 thousand people.

14 brigades - is it a lot or a little?

Before last year’s offensive, a group of 15-19 brigades was assembled in all directions across Ukraine, not counting the rear services and numerous reserve forces, represented mainly by territorial defense. The result of the offensive is known to everyone.

Are all these brigades combat ready?

For now we are talking only about numbers. Equipping such a large number of manpower with equipment and creating all the infrastructure necessary for each brigade is a complex and lengthy process, which Ukraine will not be able to implement on its own. The supply of large quantities of armored vehicles, as well as a significant number of F-16 fighters for the air offensive operation, is currently unknown. In its current form, 14 brigades are most likely not ready for normal combat and cannot be fully used in the offensive.
