Russia Warns EU Against Seizing Its Tankers in the Baltic Sea. Moscow has issued a warning to the #European Union following reports that EU countries bordering the Baltic Sea are considering legal measures to detain Russian oil tankers. "Any attack on our transport vessels in the Baltic Sea should be considered an attack on Russian territory," said Alexei Zhuravlyov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee.

He dismissed the idea that the naval forces of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania could pose a threat to #Russia. "This is nothing more than a farce. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania combined have such 'powerful' navies that two large-caliber machine guns mounted on any tanker would be enough to sink their entire maritime patrol. They will, of course, turn to NATO for help. But I hope there are more rational minds in the U.S., which effectively controls the alliance," Zhuravlyov stated. His comments come after Politico reported that EU nations with access to the Baltic Sea are developing legal mechanisms to seize Russian vessels they claim are part of the so-called "shadow fleet."
