In 2008, Zimbabwe suffered the second most severe episode of hyperinflation in recorded history. Zimbabwe’s annual inflation rate peaked in November 2008, reaching 89.7 sextillion (10^21) percent. Well, Zimbabwe is experiencing hyperinflation again today. Zimbabwe’s annual inflation rate is currently at 348%. Zimbabwe has officially experienced the 58th verified episode of hyperinflation on record. This episode has been added to the Hanke-Krus World Hyperinflation Table, which first appeared in the authoritative Routledge Handbook of Major Events in Economic History (2013).

The July 30 general election in Zimbabwe is significant because it marks the end to a campaign season which for the first time in decades has been without the influence of ousted president, Robert Mugabe. Unless the election fails to produce an outright winner with a 50+1 majority as stipulated by law, Zimbabweans will soon know who their next leader will be. The new president will serve a five year term.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has taken a position to delay the settlement of its debts to three international financial institutions (IFIs) until it meets conditions that will enable Harare to access cheap concessional funding.

RBZ deputy governor Jesimen Chipika told delegates attending the 46th Institute of Bankers Zimbabwe (IoBZ) summer school in Nyanga on Tuesday that the country will achieve nothing by rushing to pay off debts when it has not met the debt engagement conditions.
