Skyscrapers, high-rise apartments, neon signs and congested roads. These are a few things that might spring to mind when you think about a modern city.

Many of the world’s major conurbations are organically grown sprawls – think of London, Tokyo, New York or Mexico City – and face challenges including air pollution, traffic jams, waste disposal and homelessness.

The Question of Chinese Port Access in the Indian Ocean

A String of Fake Pearls? The Question of Chinese Port Access in the Indian Ocean
Chinese control of ports in other states – even those Beijing “owns” – will always remain limited.
By Natalie Klein

Earlier this month, Sri Lanka hosted a two-day conference among diplomats and non-government experts that rightly shone a spotlight on the increasing importance of the Indian Ocean. As highlighted by one delegation, it is currently what goes through the Indian Ocean (including half the world’s container traffic, one-third of bulk cargo transport, and around two thirds of the world’s maritime oil shipments) that particularly marks its global significance, rather than what may be produced from that ocean and its littoral states. The international trade associated with the Indian Ocean and the strategic significance of the region have become manifest.

A long march of the dispossessed to Delhi

A long march of the dispossessed to Delhi

India’s agrarian crisis has gone beyond the agrarian.
It’s a crisis of society. Maybe even a civilizational crisis, with perhaps the largest body of small farmers and labourers on earth fighting to save their livelihoods. The agrarian crisis is no longer just a measure of loss of land. Nor only a measure of loss of human life, jobs or productivity. It is a measure of our own loss of humanity. Of the shrinking boundaries of our humaneness. That we have sat by and watched the deepening misery of the dispossessed, including the death by suicide of well over 300,000 farmers these past 20 years. While some – ‘leading economists’ – have mocked the enormous suffering around us, even denying the existence of a crisis.

India To Put Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

India To Put Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods as Modi’s “America First” Policy
Backfires On His Sinophobic Government
Written by Adam Garrie o

India has written to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) declaring its intention to put tariffs on a variety of American products that are traditionally popular in the south Asian country. The move comes after the Trump administration failed to grant India an exemption to the new US tariffs on imported steel and aluminium. While India is not in the top ten steel importing nations in respect of the US market, New Delhi nevertheless felt the need to follow China’s lead and impose retaliatory tariffs on a protectionist US.

FARM SUBSIDIES AT WTO

INDIA REJECTS U.S. CLAIM OVER UNDERREPORTED FARM SUBSIDIES AT WTO: India has rejected a U.S. claim that New Delhi is providing inaccurate information to the World Trade Organization about its market price supports for wheat and rice crops, according to a Geneva trade official.

During a WTO agriculture committee meeting on Tuesday, the U.S. formally accused India of substantially underreporting its subsidies, a move it called inconsistent with India’s WTO obligations, the official said. In response, India rejected the U.S. “counter notification,” arguing that New Delhi has done a better job on transparency than the U.S. and has maintained a methodology that’s consistent with WTO rules, the official added.

Last month, USTR said its own calculations demonstrated that India underreported the subsidies for the two crops, causing New Delhi to exceed the domestic support it’s allowed to offer under the WTO membership rules. WTO members are required to periodically notify the body of new subsidies and other domestic support programs

Demonetisation not the only reason

Demonetisation not the only reason

.
Is the Indian economy slowing down or is it on a correction path? Was the high growth rate of 11.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2010 an aberration? The country is stalked with many questions and myriad problems.

Jobs, a key indicator for the economy, are simply not growing. Investments are not coming from internal sources. Foreign Direct Investment promises are there but at the actual level the pouring is rather slow. People invest when they have assurance of a return. The FDI is a long-term commitment so the wariness is more the normal.

Η Ινδία γίνεται 70 ετών

Η Ινδία γίνεται 70 ετών
Η μεγαλύτερη Δημοκρατία του κόσμου γιορτάζει τα γενέθλιά της
Madhav Khosla και Milan Vaishnav

NEW DELHI: India will remain "firm and resolute" on the ground or at the military level to thwart any attempt by China to "bully" Bhutan, while being "reasonable" at the politico-diplomatic level to resolve the ongoing troop stand-off with the People's Liberation Army in the Doklam area in Bhutanese territory, say sources.
