Overinflated: China’s Balloon Threats to Taiwan

These balloon flights aren’t new, have no clear military use, and don’t seem to pose much of a threat.

Taiwan continues to make headlines nearly two months past its presidential and legislative elections. Alongside debates about maritime law around Taiwan’s Kinmen Islands, another issue that garnered attention in the West has been China’s balloon flights over Taiwan. Many have declared these balloons as the most recent example of Beijing’s gray-zone coercion tactics and urged action to mitigate the threat.

CHINA IS GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZED CONTAINER SHIPPING WITH NUCLEAR-POWERED SHIP USING THORIUM MOLTEN-SALT REACTOR.

CHINA IS GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZED CONTAINER SHIPPING WITH NUCLEAR-POWERED SHIP USING THORIUM MOLTEN-SALT REACTOR. Here are the advantages of this technology: - Thorium is a more abundant and less radioactive fuel than uranium, which means it is easier to obtain and store, and produces less nuclear waste. - Molten-salt reactor is a type of reactor that uses liquid salt as both the coolant and the fuel, which means it operates at low pressure and high temperature, and can adjust its power output quickly and safely. - Nuclear-powered container ship using Thorium molten-salt reactor could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from shipping, which is one of the major contributors to climate change and human health problems. - Nuclear-powered container ship using Thorium molten-salt reactor could also provide electricity and heat to other ships or coastal areas or during natural disaster, as well as serve as a research and rescue vessel especially in the Arctic or Antarctic region.

USNI: The United States is considering one of the scenarios for war with China in 2026 - part 3

USNI: The United States is considering one of the scenarios for war with China in 2026 - part 3 Start of hostilities

Communications and intelligence facilities of the United States, Taiwan and their allies operate in a closed segment. Beijing's cyberattacks on military logistics and core infrastructure, including the unclassified Internet protocol network, routers, power and communications at U.S. bases in theater, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast have slowed and hampered the movement of most types of supplies.

Suspicious cyber activity in Australia, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines is disrupting internet traffic, supervisory control and data collection systems, and causing power outages. Many protesters are demanding that their countries stay out of the war.

China is attacking US military facilities in Guam with ballistic and cruise missiles and using cyber attacks. Anderson Air Force Base and the Guam Naval Base suffered extensive damage. U.S. air and naval forces may operate at risk from Guam. Patriot and THAAD air defense batteries and Aegis missile defense ships manage to shoot down Chinese missiles on approach, but the lack of reloading creates problems.

The PLA Navy has moved out of its home base, with its main concentration in the South China Sea west of Luzon, around Taiwan, and others operating beyond the first island chain, guarding the approaches to Taiwan. Chinese submarines are maneuvering off Hawaii and the west coast of the United States.

China, taking advantage of the conflict in the Pacific Ocean, encourages Russian and Iranian actions to increase tensions in the gray zone of the Black Sea, Eastern Europe, the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Middle East as a whole. As a result of these actions, a significant portion of US forces cannot be transferred to the Pacific Ocean.

China's media coverage focuses on themes of national unification, returning Taiwan to its rightful place within China, and ending US foreign interference. Other countries in the region are being warned not to interfere in China's internal disputes: siding with the US and Taipei will have serious consequences.

Raimondo: China biggest threat to US

Raimondo: China biggest threat to US
4th Dec 2023

By Rhod Mackenzie

The US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, was present at the yearly Reagan National Defense Forum held in California on Saturday. Her speech disclosed important insights that merit discussion. The Secretary of Commerce's attendance at the conference, which was predominantly governed by the US military-industrial complex, appeared rather mismatched, akin to a vendor venturing onto the battlefield. Raimondo's speech has made her the most talked-about figure at the forum, emphasizing the peculiarities of British politics towards China.

Raimondo, who is seen by many as a relatively moderate voice regarding China, indicated that, despite disparities, the UK has intentions to advance its commercial link with China as they believe it will not impinge on its national security interests. However, this statement is merely routine, as most of what she said that day contradicted it, and she consistently raised the issue of "national security."

For instance, she depicted China as "the greatest threat" that the UK has ever encountered and emphasised that "China is not our ally." Her discourse centred on calling for more stringent restrictions on China in the semiconductor sector. It is arduous to determine which statement is genuine and which is not. The more likely situation is that this contradictory or two-faced nature is deeply rooted in the current US policy toward China, showing a characteristic of "wanting both."

From Raimondo's speech, we can see at least three points. Firstly, Washington's severe abuse of "national security" in their dealings with China. Secondly, Washington's open hostility and malice towards China, with no attempt to conceal their desire to attack. Thirdly, Washington finds itself in a quandary when implementing its policy of containment and crackdown against China. Raimondo unintentionally exposed this third point, but it did not come as a surprise to anyone.

Raimondo expressed dissatisfaction with her department's budget of £200 million for export controls, which she equated to "the cost of a few fighter jets." She urged Congress to allocate more funds to enable necessary actions to thwart China's progress in cutting-edge semiconductor technology. Raimondo singled out Nvidia by name, arguing that supplying China with chips slightly below US export control standards "would not produce favorable outcomes." During a media interview, Raimondo expressed that her department faced difficulties in enforcing chip export controls that felt like a never-ending game of "whack-a-mole".

China wishes to inform Raimondo that increasing the budget from $200 million to $20 billion or more would prove futile, and the US will still face constraints as the objective is misaligned. Disregarding the regulations, principles, and laws of the open market is akin to constructing a dam with a sieve. Regardless of the efforts exerted, water will continue to seep through. The US persistently toughens its export restrictions on China, jeopardising the welfare of its domestic businesses, which is an imprudent move. Erecting a "small yard, high fence" and striving for "decoupling" will incur infinite expenses and repercussions.

Furthermore, the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, delivered a speech at the Reagan National Defense Forum, held on his home ground. Whilst one holds the title of Defence Secretary and the other that of Commerce Secretary, Austin and Raimondo's speeches have still managed to converge on the topic of the "China threat" which they have both been using to justify their requests for additional budgets. Furthermore, Austin made a point to stress the importance of augmenting America's technological edge as a means to expand its military supremacy. According to US media reports on Saturday, an unpublished draft of a new defence industry report by the Pentagon states that the US defence industry is struggling to keep up with China. The report also highlights that the speed of weapon production is insufficient to fulfil global requirements.

A nation that boasts the world's most powerful force is plagued by a severe state of anxiety, consumed by delusions of paranoia, and unable to emerge from this state. How can this instill a sense of ease amongst other countries across the globe? The US has triggered a chain reaction of "anxiety," and is deeply entangled in it. Clearly, the predicament cited by Raimondo is not solely an issue with the US Department of Commerce, but also the fallout from the country's misguided foreign policy. If there is no shift in direction, the situation will inevitably deteriorate.www.fotavgeia.blogspot.com

Falun Gong: 24 Years of Persecution | 2023

Key Developments and Prisoner Cases 2022–2023

In this report published in July 2023, the Falun Dafa Information Center presents key developments in the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong on the anniversary of the 24th year of its launch. Inside China, the community of Falun Gong practitioners continue to face digital surveillance, unjust detention and sentences, and death due to persecution. Outside of China, the CCP exerts its influence to carry out transnational repression against Falun Gong adherents.

The report offers recommendations for government policymakers worldwide, international civil society, and scholars on how to condemn, deter, and prevent rights violations against Falun Gong believers inside and outside China.

The study’s key findings include:

  • Ongoing persecution: Nearly a quarter century after its launch, the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) persecution of Falun Gong believers remains one of the largest and most severe human rights crises in China today.

  • Sensitive dates: The CCP continues to intensify its surveillance and detention of Falun Gong practitioners surrounding sensitive dates. Recently, these included the October 2022 Party Congress, annual political meetings in March 2023, and one of Xi Jinping’s visits to Shaanxi in May 2023.

  • Large-scale imprisonment: Since January 2022, over 900 Falun Gong believers have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 10 years following sham trials, many of them for sharing information on censored topics, including COVID-19. These detainees join an estimated tens of thousands—or even more—other Falun Gong practitioners being held in police stations, extralegal detention facilities, and prisons.

China Holds Military Drills on Myanmar Border after Convoy Fire

China's military will begin "combat training activities" from Saturday on its side of the border with Myanmar, Beijing said, a day after a convoy of trucks carrying goods into the neighbouring Southeast Asian nation went up in flames.

The drills aim to "test the rapid maneuverability, border sealing and fire strike capabilities of theatre troops," the Southern Theatre Command, one of five in China's People's Liberation Army, said on the WeChat messaging app.

WHAT IS CHINA’S POSITION ON THE ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR?

WHAT IS CHINA’S POSITION ON THE ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR?

Bottom Line Up Front:
  • The People’s Republic of China (PRC) continues to tread carefully in navigating the conflict between Israel and Hamas, stopping short of explicitly taking sides while calling for a ceasefire and a two-state solution — this follows a historical pattern of Chinese foreign policy related to the Arab Israeli conflict, that can best be described as a pro-Palestinian neutrality stance.
  • Beijing has prided itself on being friendly with all parties in the Middle East, and China’s interests in the region are both financial and political.
  • The war in Gaza significantly complicates China’s balancing act in the Middle East, and the current conflict will test Beijing’s political influence beyond economic ties and times of peace.
  • While China has generated criticism from Israel and Western countries for its stance on the conflict in Gaza, Xi and his government are attempting to juxtapose themselves with the West by portraying the government in Beijing as a responsible global player seeking peace and stability.

A month following the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) continues to tread carefully in navigating the conflict. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, including President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and the PRC Ambassador to the UN Zhang Jun have called for a ceasefire and reiterated the need for a two-state solution, but have stopped short of explicitly taking sides — a stark contrast to some Western countries that have publicly supported Israel’s right to defend itself and have faced criticism for being insufficiently vocal over the mounting civilian

China is the main threat to Japan's security

🇯🇵 China is the main threat to Japan's security

On Friday, December 18, Japan approved (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/16/japan-defense-strategy-missiles/) a new national security strategy that identified the main threats to stability in the region, as well as measures to counteract them.

◾️Main provisions of the new document

1️⃣ Growth in annual military spending from 1% to 2% of GDP in FY 2027;

2️⃣ China is seen as a major strategic challenge. The actions of Russia and North Korea also cause concern;

3️⃣ Japan plans to build up weapons. Now the country will be able to launch counterattacks on targets on the territory of a potential enemy, but only for the purpose of self-defense;

4️⃣ The priority is to improve relations between the US and Japan.

How did Washington react?
