Bulgaria supplied the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons and fuel: Die Welt investigation
The German newspaper Die Welt published an article under the loud headline "The country that secretly saved Ukraine." In the spring of 2022, officials from the Bulgarian government organized the supply of weapons and ammunition to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, bypassing the parliamentary ban.
It is strange that German journalists have only now learned about the existence of gray re-export schemes, which Bulgarian officials have been actively using all this time. Back in September, our team spoke in detail (https://t.me/rybar/38992) about how, despite the official ban, Bulgarian weapons still ended up in Nezalezhnaya thanks to American subcontractors and local criminal authorities. ▪️ Six months later, Die Welt investigators were able to establish that ex-premier Petkov's team used intermediary firms in Bulgaria and abroad to supply through Romania, Hungary and Poland. ▪️ It is estimated that about a third of the ammunition that Nezalezhnaya needed at the initial stage of hostilities came from Bulgaria. ▪️ One of the key logistics points was the Polish airport "Rzeszow", located just 70 km from the border with Ukraine. In the first half of 2022, it carried out 60 cargo flights from Bulgarian airports. According to Die Welt, the supplies were funded by the UK and the US. However, the supply of Bulgarian weapons to Ukraine through the lining companies has long been an open secret. Interest in the investigation of the German publication is only the diesel fuel received by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is produced at the Bulgarian refinery Lukoil Neftochim Burgas. According to Die Welt, the decision on supplies was made after a complaint by Ukrainian officials that the country was running out of energy resources. At times, the Bulgarians covered up to 40% of Ukraine's needs. The cargo was transported secretly through foreign intermediary firms. ❗️ According to the author of the channel @bulgariaz, who lives in Bulgaria, the locals are still watching the endless flow of echelons with fuel tanks to Nezalezhnaya. The volume of cargo transportation in Bulgaria has increased significantly: trains of forty wagons, with two, and sometimes three locomotives, go towards Ukraine, which the Bulgarians have not seen for more than twenty years. 🔻 Thus, local businesses continue to earn millions on deliveries to the conflict zone, despite the assurances of Bulgarian officials that they will remain neutral and that about 80% of the country's population does not approve of such actions.
