What's going on in Sudan?
Situation as of 18:00 April 17, 2023

In Sudan, active clashes continue between the Rapid Reaction Forces (RRF) and the Sudanese army.

At least 97 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict, and more than 365 have been injured to varying degrees, according to the Sudanese doctors' union. At the same time, WHO reported 83 dead and 1,126 injured.

According to the central committee of doctors of Sudan, medical facilities are overcrowded, and the largest of them, the People's Teaching Hospital and the Khartoum Teaching Hospital, have completely stopped working as a result of the bombing.

🔻Active clashes continue in Khartoum

The RRF announced that they had taken control of the military intelligence building and recaptured the Presidential Palace. Fighting continues in the area of the General Staff.

The rebels also stormed the residences of the Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his close associate Shams al-Din Kabbashi.

▪️The Sudanese Armed Forces continue to use artillery and aircraft to shell the positions of the Rapid Reaction Forces. According to the latest reports, a large column of tanks was moving towards the General Staff to counter the rebels.

Skirmishes continue in the Omdurman area and Khartoum airport.

▪️As a result of the clashes, the pumping stations that provided water to residential buildings were out of order.

Some power lines have also been destroyed, causing Khartoum to gradually lose power.

🔻Regional Showdowns

The SBR returned the air base in the city of Meroe under their control. Fighting continues in the vicinity of the city.

The rebels also managed to capture the air base in the city of Jebel Awliy, as a result of which they gained access to heavy equipment and aircraft.

▪️The command of the Western Region of the Sudanese Armed Forces in Nyala decided to join the Rapid Reaction Force.

▪️The frequent change of control over key facilities in the regions and the capital of Sudan is due to the greater mobility of the RRF units, compared to the regular army.

The rebels use tactical retreats, regroupings and counterattacks, thereby debilitating the military, which emphasizes aircraft and heavy equipment. This tactic gives the Rapid Reaction Force an edge in urban combat.

🔻Other events

▪️The Russian Embassy in Sudan is preparing to evacuate Russian citizens from crisis areas.

RRF Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Hamdan Daglo "Hamedti" called on the world community to take action and intervene in the Sudanese crisis to counter al-Burhan, whom he accuses of adherence to radical Islamism.

▪️Chairman of the Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced his readiness for negotiations with the Rapid Reaction Forces.
